Thread Name: rebellion and protest in John Henry
Subject: RE: rebellion and protest in John Henry
From John Paul, "John Paul's Book" (1874), p. 331:

"It has always been evident enough to my mind that a man is nothing but a man, whether he wear a farmer's frock or a parson's gown.

From the New London [Conn.] Gazette (Feb. 28, 1838), p. 2:

"Mr. Copeland concluded by saying, that he was but a *workingman* - said he, 'I am nothing but a man,' of which his audience needed no assurance. He was *all a man,* and such as would do honor to any cause or calling. "
