"a TV provider"

Sure. And a radio provider with both national and regional stations (40 of the latter at last count). Both TV and radio are heavily involved in education, and BBC children's TV is second to none. The BBC funds several national and regional symphony orchestras and a number of choirs and smaller groups. If you like religion and royalty, well the Beeb is your port of call every time. The BBC runs the biggest classical music festival in the world, the Proms. The BBC is, among broadcast service providers, by far the most trusted source of national and world news and runs a 24-hour news channel, as well as the World Service. The BBC is at the centre of culture in this country. No-one likes everything nor can catch anything like everything, but you have a huge choice and you get all that for 42p a day. Commercial channels are not free either, are they? Everything you see advertised costs more because it's advertised. And you can't not pay just because you go for a wee or put the kettle on during the ads. You'd have to work quite hard to pay less than 42p a day in an effort to avoid paying for all those ads when you buy those goods. You could try, but I've yet to meet anyone with enough energy to put in the effort. Only anti-Beeb ideologues whinge about the licence fee. And we've got the Archers for chrissake.
