Somewhat related Bobert story to follow:

Back when I was 17 and 18 I spent my summers on Long Beach Island, NJ, which Hurricane Sandy recently decimated... Anyway, the way that all of us kids made money was clamming, Every day 4 of us would get into Bobby Gray's 16 foot boat and head out into Barneget Bay where we would spend 2 to 3 hours (low tide) digging and "jumping" the clams up our legs, into our right hand and into a bushel basket sitting in the middle of an inner tube... In a good hour you could collect 500-600 clams... Every evening Mr. Cotrell's refrigeration truck would pull up to the beach house and collect the day's harvest of clams and pay us for the previous day's haul... They paid 1.6 cents per clam which was really good money for the 60's if you had a really good day of 1700-1800 clams...

BTW, every kid who has ever clammed knows all about "clamming boots" which were made of old inner tube and sewn up to go over your feet to protect them from being cut...

BTW, Part B... Ya' had to have a license to clam and on occasion the bay-cops would check you out and make sure you weren't taking any clams that were too small... Ya' see, the cherry-stones, which are smaller than a 50 cent piece, were illegal to harvest... But the weeklies (folks who just came to the beach for a week which was just about everyone except a few of us) would pay good money for cherry stones so all the sneaker clammers had a little onion sack tied under their baskets that couldn't be seen by the bay-cops... Of course,k I never did that (wink, wink)...

There ya'll have it... Another Bobert story comes to a close...
