I haven't heard those lyrics but I like them. I'm guessing the melody is different than I remember as well. In 1963 we used to sing:

The story I got was that the song was a street chant sung by neighborhood children to warn the prostitutes upstairs that the police were coming. I can't remember anymore where I got that story.

Now I'll have to hunt up the mcgarrigles' version.
