There were reports of a "self-destructing" string bass during a Wilders(?) act not too long ago. Similar to the description above, the neck just separated from the body and large hunks fell to the floor. They managed to finish the act with a borrowed instrument, and "promised not to break it."

Observations about a paucity of street stomps is quite accurate. The proliferation of "wildcat" private stages with amplified sound and "scheduled acts" has made it nearly impossible to play in most of the popular street areas - and in many of the camps.

The noise from the "stages" prevents people from wandering about and finding compatible players early on in the day, and hence there are no impromptu groups large enough to play together - over the blaring amped up stages - later on (when the fun used to begin).

The few who did play on the Pecan Grove streets this year were almost all groups/acts who came together and just did their acts on the street instead of on the stages. Performing pre-rehearsed acts, in place of sharing music as a community activity, is the new rule - and not one I care much for.
