The only version of "The Blues in the Night" that I've seen printed had choices for a lot of words:

My mama done tol' me
When I was in kneepants/pigtails,
My mama done tol' me, son/hon,
etc.

Unless Mercer wrote one version first, all he gets credit or blame for is playing both sides.
