GUEST,Richard Bridge (cookie and format C) Stripped truss rod nut (9) RE: BS: Stripped truss rod nut 26 Nov 02

Hammer and chisel likely to do more harm than good. Slot will probably transmit less torque before shearing than an allen head anyway. And of course heat is going to be a no-no too.

Is there a metallurgist in the house? My first thought is to drill the hex (easy if it's on the headstock, hard if it's on a cross-brace), make a steel rod just too large to go in, freeze the bits off it until it is a push fit, then gently heat the other end of it and apply torque hoping the shrink-fit will transmit enough torque to do the necessary, but is it going to be possible to remove the allen bolt entirely and refit a new one?
