Guest Peter: Never expect a song to be 100% accurate on technical or historical detail. There is a little thing called the "folk process" getting in the way.

*Creative process. Professional poets & playwrights been doing it for centuries. That said, 100% was never on offer for this little ditty:

The engineer shouts through his trumpet
"Tell the mate we got bad news.
Can't get steam for the fire in the flue"

Engineer, t'rough de trumpet, gives de fireman news,
Couldn't make steam for de fire in de flues.

A flue (each fire box has more than one) is the first stage of the exhaust system. There should be no fuel or oxygen left to burn. A collapsed flue from careless water tending was near certain death for all hands. Sooooo if either steam or flame are present in de flue(s) one of two things was also true:

1. De bulgine already done blown and dem is angels on de chorus or,
2. You're singing minstrelsy unrelated to naval science.
