We now more about what made St Kilda uninhabitable: dioxin and tetanus. The dioxin came from centuries of burning salty peat - it built up to toxic concentrations in the soil. And the soil also accumulated tetanus spores to such a level that in the 19th century most babies died of it within a few days of birth. |
