I used to play music in a lovely old pub called the 'Compasses' at Crundale, near Canterbury. It meant nothing until I was shown the old pub sign, for the 'God Encompasses'. I later lived & worked at Thames TV in Euston & the local pub was the 'Goat and Compasses' which I presume had a similar origin?
