My unabridged dictionary didn't have sproose, but with regards to spruce, it had some interesting definitions.

1. spruce = ME for Prussia. Prussia used to be Pruce.
2. spruce = neat and dapper
3. spruce = overly fussy
4. spruce = spruce beer
5. spruce as a verb, = to get nicely dressed up
6. spruce = a kind of evergreen tree

(Not that any of these explains the line "For sending me up with spruce in the trees".)
