One of the saddest points made - apart from the general devastation - was how the ex-servicemen were shunned and ignored when they came back to civvie life. "No ex-servicemen required"... Disgusting. 'Twas ever thus - Nelson's seamen were heroes when they were in the thick of the Napoleonic wars - and shunned as vagrants, tramps and ne'er-do-wells when they returned home in peacetime.
