Contrast the number of people who , upon hearing a recording, go out and buy sheet music, with those who, upon learning a new song (whether through tablature, direct transmission or standard notation) go out and buy a recording. I guess there isn't any way to tabulate the results, but personal experience inclines me to the opinion that a musician will stand to gain more sales through free transmission of material rather than tight control. Of course, I'm not referring to bootleg recordings. I very much doubt that any artist whose material appeared on the OLGA sites lost any significant money, but the Fox agency is a different kettle of fish. They stick a finger into many pies, and where an individual would be willing to sacrifice a dollar for the advertising, they would rather sacrifice the individual for the dollar.

The internet is going to change things almost as fast as a politician changes his core values, but I'd rather see us err on the side of free exchange rather than commercial prudence (is that an oxymoron?). Didn't Roger Miller once sing a line....

"sing for your supper,

remember on the other end of the spoon a

guy's workin' for a song."
