Willie-O Origin: The Badger Drive / The Log Driver's Waltz (14) RE: Badger driver/ Logdrivers waltz. 22 Sep 08

In case anyone is still puzzled, Badger is a town in central Newfoundland.   The Badger Drive is of course just another log drive. The two songs are both waltzes, and both about log driving on rivers in Canada, except that Newfoundland was not part of Canada during John Devine's era (d 1929). Log Driver's Waltz is much better known nowadays, but Badger Drive has been performed and recorded by many well-known folksingers including Stan Rogers and (I think) Alan Mills.

The backstory to Badger Drive, supposedly, is that Mr Devine had been fired from the A.N.D. company for drinking on the job, and wrote the song in part to flatter the bosses into rehiring him--and in fact his plan worked. I don't think the story has a moral. Good tune though.
