GUEST,Rich National Instruments! (36) RE: National Instruments! 20 Apr 08

The Uilleann pipes were invented as a stealthy in-door version of their mouth blown predecessors, the playing of which could get one hung! It's believed that the first use of a bladder to control the flow of air in a reed instrument would be in ancient Babylon, but references are vague and moreover, it's almost like any one people claiming the drum! The uilleann pipes however were created in the keys of B-flat and C-natural, for the sake of playing quietly and not being hung. The current model, in concert D pitch, was invented in Philadelphia by the Taylor brothers, formerly of County Cavan(not exactly the first county one thinks of when considering traditional music) for the express purpose of being loud enough to fill a vaudeville hall.
