Expressive? Stringsinger, et al; the one person I would have mentioned is, as you say, Mahalia Jackson--I was scrolling down to add her name, thanks for mentioning her. There are a handfull of singers whom I have my voice students--usually wanting to sing serious literature (opera/ classical) or Broadway--listen to & read about. She is one of the tops on the list. Marion Williams was one of the most amazing singers this country ever produced.
