Carlos Castaneda had an interesting conversation with a bilingual coyote in the Sonora desert in Mexico. The fact that his consciousness had been altered somewhat with the ingestion of a handful of peyote buttons probably had nothing to do with it.

I used to live on Dyess Air Force base in Abilene, Texas. At the end of the flight line was a big field. Late at night we would occasionally get a glimpse of coyotes, roving for rabbits and field mice. The ones we saw always looked pretty grungy. Their hollow flanks and mangy coats barely set them apart from the sagebrush and tumbleweeds. Sometimes you could hear the cry of their pups - an eerily piercing whine that reminded me (for some odd reason) of human babies.
