I cycled from Altrincham to York (for the York CTC Rally) a few years ago. It's a cracking route but I found that all of it was 'cycle-able' on a tourer so I had to use some sections of road. It is however eminently walkable.

I've walked, run, and cycled quite a lot on this (the better) side of the Pennines and have found it a great path.

You'll be OK on this side with Les & Dave the Gnome looking after you.....I'm not too sure about the Yorkshire side, although I believe they have electricity now.
