GUEST,Skipper Jack Origins: Shanty's role in Disasters (4) RE: Origins: Shanty's role in Disasters 24 Mar 04

I had a disaster singing "Sally Rackett" which I had learnt from the "Sing Out" magazine.

It was a baptism in a way. I had joined a seriously traditional folk club, and I decided to sing my first unaccompanied sea shanty. I had little knowledge at the time of the purpose of a shanty.

I sang it like a funeral dirge and I soon realised by the audience reaction that something was terribly wrong with my performance!

Since then I have learnt a lot about shanties even having hands on experience on a tall ship and to receive a compliment from the great man himself - Stan Hugill, is one of my treasured memories.
