SeanM Musicians Selling Out Their Souls & Ours (27) RE: Musicians Selling Out Their Souls & Ours 03 Nov 03

My opinion:

Selling the rights to a song as an artist is no more "selling out" or "selling your soul" than selling tickets to a concert. There are exceptions that can be argued - some organizations are generally held not to be encouraged, and to assist them is to ally yourself with them (imagine if the KKK, Al Qaeda, WAR or any other hate group started advertising with Bob Dylan's full permission - I don't ever see it happening, but Bob's rep would take a HUGE hit).

To my simple mind, the bigger problem is when a publishing company or label removes the artist and the artist's consent from the matter. Even moreso, when they remove any compensation that the artist would otherwise receive.

So long as the author/performer has a clear, definite voice in the decision, then they should be able to go for it without any fear of repercussions other than would be attached to the support they're lending (the "unsavory organization) thing again). Gods know that our group has thought many times about how quickly we'd jump on advertising or soundtrack work if it was offered. Residuals are a good thing...
